GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Members of the Beyond Boundaries Dance Collective perform purely for the love of dance.
All proceeds from their twice-a-year performances pay for a lighting designer and sound crew, and a $1,000 scholarship for a Colorado Mesa University dance student.
The collective was founded in 2005 by dancers and choreographers from the Grand Valley community who wanted a venue to keep on dancing, and help new, student dancers further their training.
The dance collective will present three evening performances, Feb. 9-11, at CMU's intimate Experimental Theatre in the Moss Performing Arts Center.
Two of Beyond Boundaries founders, both exquisite dancers, Liz Vrettos and Analii Cunningham, will each perform solos of their own choreography.
Connie Foutz Monroe will direct an improvisational piece titled “Ink” — that explores communication using newspapers as a visual.
Rebecca Fleishman was inspired to create “The Last Beat of my HEART” — a dance commemorating the American Heart Association's February Heart Health Awareness month. The dance is a tribute to those who have succumbed to heart disease, the number one killer in the United States, Fleishman said.
The concert also includes a “fun, upbeat, unconventional” a cappella tap dance called, “It's All About the Rhythm,” choreographed by Julie Sinnott.
Renowned fashion designer Melody Eggen has created costumes for Ann Sanders' piece — a work that delves into the world of fashion. Sanders is a CMU professor emeritus and a founder of Beyond Boundaries.
Laura Bradley will present a piece where dancers move and speak, using text by writer Carol Christ.
“Melonie Buchanan Murray has choreographed a beautiful duet on point,” Fleishman said.
New group pieces will be presented by CMU alumni Tiffany Freeman and Natasha Krasnow, as well as Absolute Dance owner Theresa Kahl Blee, and a humorous final piece by guest artist Rebecca Maniatis.
The winter concert is “a nice collage of different styles,” Fleishman said. “There's light-hearted lyrical jazz, some thought-provoking modern, and some ballet.”
