GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Art Center is hosting the annual Member's Exhibit, and for 2012 the members have been given all four galleries for their work. The opening for this show is today, Friday, Feb. 3, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The exhibit will be up through Feb. 24.
For the first time The Art Center annual Member's Exhibit was given the entire building. It was obvious to staff that the work was getting more ambitious in size and execution and a new era of membership acknowledgment was deserved.
Longtime members are thrilled with the outcome and according to ceramic artist Robbie Breaux, it was just 10 years ago that “staff had to call members to bring work in to fill just one gallery. Now our building is full.”
Beyond filling the galleries with the talent of its members, there are a couple of new introductions to the annual festivities. The Swing Set will be playing their big band sound down in the ballroom area of Studio Colorado starting at 7. The Art Center has also decided to bring back the People's Choice Awards — prizes totaling $800. Visitors as well as artists get to vote for one week on their favorite works.
The community sponsors for these awards are Kendra and Chuck McDaniel and Ron Beckman for Best of Show; Gerson Management Investments for First Place Award, High Noon Solar for Second Place; and Western Equality for Third Place Award.
The public is invited to vote from Feb. 3-10. The awards will be given out noon, Saturday, Feb. 11, during The Art Students League monthly meeting at The Art Center. Beyond the awards, center members enjoy the opportunity to exhibit and sell their original works of art.
The February First Friday reception is free and open to the public with the doors opening at 6:30. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. All Art Center exhibition and educational programming information is available at www.gjartcenter.org or call the front desk at 243-7337, ext. 2.
