GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Be prepared for romance, inspiration and relaxation Thursday, Feb. 9, when piano solo artist Jim Brickman takes the stage at the Avalon Theatre.
That is what the music is all about, Brickman said during a phone interview Friday, while on tour in Chicago.
“It's all about how the music can make you relaxed and happy,” he said.
Brickman's piano music is all original, and he often collaborates with well-known musical artists such as Lady Antebellum, Kenny Loggins, Carly Simon, Herb Alpert, and Olivia Newton-John, and others. When performing solo, Brickman does the singing.
“It's not like a recital,” Brickman said. “It's more of a theatrical one-man show.
“I do a lot of my hits,” both instrumental and vocal. “If you're lucky enough to have them, you should do them. It's people's connection to me.”
Some of Brickman's best-known compositions include top hits “Valentine,” “The Gift,” “Love of My Life,” “Simple Things,” and “Peace.”
Brickman has 28 albums, six that became Gold and Platinum; 30 top 10 radio hits; and two Grammy nominations. He's tied for most number one albums on Billboard's New Age chart.
In November, Brickman released “Romanza,” a collection of Italian-inspired original love songs. The Grand Junction stop is part of his 2012 Romanza Tour.
Brickman has won two SESAC “Songwriter of the Year” awards, a Canadian Country Music Award and a Dove Award from the Gospel Music Association.
Brickman began playing piano at age 5, and went on to study music at the prestigious Cleveland Institute of Music.
He performs 150 dates a year throughout the United States and has performed at Carnegie Hall and at the White House, including several charity functions.
“I'm very happy to be coming to Grand Junction for the first time,” Brickman said.
He encourages multi-generations to come for what he described as an evening of “light-hearted moments, happy, poignant moments; a celebration of music, that will be charming and funny.”
