GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Grand Junction Commission on Arts and Culture's annual grant program has been in place since 1992.
By awarding grant money, the idea is to incentivize the community to produce high quality arts and cultural activities and projects, build audiences for the arts, encourage new events or the expansion of existing events, and support the many local nonprofit cultural organizations and artists.
The Art Commission is currently accepting applications from nonprofit art and cultural organizations in the state of Colorado to help fund arts or cultural events, projects or programs taking place in Grand Junction, March 2012-March 2013.
In 2011, the grant program funded 20 organizations for a total of $36,000. Many awarded grants were for fledgling events. For instance, the Teen Art Show from Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado featured artwork from youth who participated in their grief support groups. And the first ever Grand Valley Performing Arts Festival brought together dance, music, theater and poetry for a weekend of family entertainment.
Several organizations funded were launched in 2010 and are continuing to thrive. They include the Grand Valley Art Students League, which has grown to 110 artist members who support many local arts-related events, and the Western Colorado Writers' Forum Poetry in the Streets, which broadcast poetry and short prose pieces daily on KAFM and has installed poetry downtown.
The grant applicants generated $256,000 in ticket sales, art sales, concessions, and leveraged another $103,000 in donations from outside sources. These events and activities involved 3,053 artists and approximately 500,000 people attended.
