GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Sept. 29 was a good day for landscape artist John Lintott.
Besides being his birthday, Lintott learned he had won the commission to create the Governor's Arts award for 2012, and it was the day he and photographer Rob Kurtzman signed the lease for their new gallery-studio on Main Street.
The Kurtzman - Lintott Gallery and Hang Ups Custom Framing will celebrate First Friday, Feb. 3, with a grand opening and reception from 6-9 p.m.
Both Lintott's oil paintings and Kurtzman's photographs focus strictly on landscapes.
“It's a great partnership,” Lintott said. “There's no competition. When people come in they usually know if they like photography or painting. I think our work shows well together.”
When Lintott started concentrating on landscapes six or seven years ago, he said he never looked back.
“I love being outside, I love the state, the wonderful places in just this area,” he said.
Kurtzman, who is a forensic pathologist by day, enjoys photographing local scenery — his works have shown in Denver, Aspen and Beaver Creek galleries.
“I always have a camera with me,” ready to snag that perfect weather and lighting, he said.
Lintott will create three paintings for the Governor's Arts award — two will go to Colorado cities recognized for their contributions to the local art scene. The other — a work in progress depicting Monument Canyon with a view of Independence Monument — will hang in the state capital.
“I'm very humbled and excited” about the commission, Lintott said.
Lintott and Kurtzman have done a beautiful job remodeling the 3,000-square-foot shop which includes 2,000 square feet of gallery space, a custom framing area, a sitting area with an electric fireplace and a room for workshops.
The gallery and frame shop is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
