In late 2011 an inner prompting was gently pushing me to do something a little out of my comfort zone. It was as if a little voice was telling me to replace any fears I may have with new adventures. Hmmm…what did this mean?
As I sat with it a realization presented itself and I knew the answer. All of my life I have been a relatively free spirit. Lately though, perhaps in the past couple of years, I have enjoyed comfortable patterns and habits in my daily life. This is not to say this is bad or unhealthy. What it might have facilitated, however, is a slowing down of my soul's evolution. Somehow it seems that complacency and extreme comfort are not conducive to continual growth.
With this recognition I decided to make it my intention to have 2012 be a year of adventure for me, to push myself a bit out of my comfort zone and feel the freedom from self-imposed limits once again. So I planned an adventure that was to begin on Jan. 5. What a great segue into the New Year!
Over the past year I had met several amazing, intuitive, artistic, deeply spiritual women who all “just happened” to live in various places in Florida. (I say this tongue-in-cheek because I don't believe in coincidence). A-ha! A Florida adventure was about to be dreamed into reality. I would rent a car and drive all around Florida to visit each of these incredible women.
The planning was invigorating and exciting, and when each woman I contacted extended a warm welcome I finalized my adventure. I purchased a map and mapped out my route. I coordinated with each woman the dates I would be in their area. I bought my plane ticket and was ready to rock and roll! I felt light and full of life and expansion and giddiness.
I flew into Orlando on a Thursday afternoon. As we were approaching Orlando I looked out of the window in the airplane and saw the city below and all of a sudden a wave of fear washed over me.
“Catherine, what do you think you're doing? You're flying into a city and state you don't know, have never been here, renting a car by yourself and driving somewhere you don't have a clue where it is…thump, thump, thump…breathe. You can do this. Call in your angels now!”
As I deplaned, got my luggage and found my way to the rental car place, I was feeling a bit more courageous. Then the woman at the car rental counter was trying to talk me into buying “this kind of insurance or that kind of insurance,” all at an extra cost per day. What do I do? Breathe. Center. Relax.
With great trust I finally told her I didn't want any insurance because I knew my angels would protect me. She was quiet for a moment just looking at me with a quizzical expression on her face and then asked, “Really?”
I responded with a confident “yes” and she said, “That's just awesome!” Remember, it's an adventure, right?
This set the tone for my amazing adventure for the next 10 days. My whole trip was easy-breezy with no glitches. In the words of Leo Buscaglia, “Life is uncharted territory. It reveals its story one moment at a time.”
My story unfolded with every mile I drove, with each conversation and experience I encountered and with each person I met. My soul grew exponentially and took flight as if on the wings of angels. I learned so much about myself by getting out of my comfort zone. It was a journey to remember always…uncharted territory.
How might you create more adventure in your life? I challenge you this week to give some thought to this question. How can you stretch and expand beyond what might be comfortable in order to move forward and know yourself a little better? It will be worth the effort, guaranteed.
I'll leave you with one more quote and encourage you to live life as a free spirit and a willingness to grow in 2012.
