GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — A couple of years ago, a friend turned retired Grand Junction resident Jane Berger on to “The Doctors,” a daytime talk show hosted by medical experts who explore and educate on all aspects of health and fitness
She particularly took interest in the show's resident OB/GYN Dr. Lisa Masterson.
“She's just so informative of women's issues that I've learned a lot,” Berger, 74, said. Emergency room doctor, Travis Stork, is also a favorite. “He is the best looking,” she said, playfully.
Berger catches the ABC program whenever her busy life allows.
During the month of October, Swift Communications, the parent company of the Grand Junction Free Press, held an online contest in which one person and a guest could win a three-night trip to Hollywood to see a live taping of “The Doctors.”
The contest was publicized in the Free Press, where Berger saw it and thought she'd give it a shot.
“I registered online (at gjfreepress.com) and entered once,” she said. “If you're going to win, it only takes one entry.”
And right she was.
Out of thousands of entries across the western United States, Berger's was randomly chosen.
The folks at USA Weekend, who sponsored the contest with Swift, notified Berger recently over the telephone.
When they called, she thought it was just another scam preying on senior citizens.
“So you don't want my credit card number, then?” Berger asked the person on the phone.
“I was just surprised. I usually don't win,” she said.
Berger hung up the phone and immediately told her husband of 50+ years, Al Berger. She also told her family which includes four sons, one grandson, four granddaughters, and a great-grandson, Daymein, who's 4 month old. They're all so happy for her, she said, and they all want to go with her, naturally.
Berger, though, hasn't decided who she's taking. Right now, it's a toss up between Al and one of her sons. Berger has family in Burbank, Calif., so they'll try to fit that in on the trip.
She's hoping to make the trip in spring 2012 when “The Doctors” resumes taping after the holidays. Berger is excited because she was told she'd get to meet the castmembers prior to the taping.
“I need to make a list of health questions to ask the doctors ... and I'm going to give Travis a hug.”
