GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — People will have an opportunity to purchase art, meet the artists and support a good cause at the Counseling & Education Center's seventh annual “Have a Heart for the Community” arts and crafts fundraiser Friday, Oct. 21.
Thirty-one different artists representing fabric art, stained-glass, watercolor and acrylic paintings, pottery, jewelry, beadwork, wood sculpture, and other media will be present to talk with visitors about their work.
“There will be a whole potpourri of beautiful locally made crafts and art at reasonable prices,” special events and volunteer coordinator Wynne Bouley said. “We have a slew of very talented people.”
Artist Michelle Pattee will be there with her unique scratchboard artworks. Pattes's award-winnng works are found in several private collections in the United States and England.
Pattee covers a white, clay-coated hardboard panel with black India ink. The ink is then scratched away using a sharp, metal-tipped knife and other tools. An accumulation of meticulously placed scratches form the image.
The Have a Heart for the Community fundraiser is from 4-8 p.m. The $5 ticket entrance fee includes three appetizers and three beverages, plus the chance to win door prizes.
The Counseling and Education Center, formerly known as the Center for Enriched Communications, offers affordable counseling services to individuals and families in a home-like setting, at 2708 Patterson Road. They offer help in the areas of emotional, psychological and/or spiritual intervention — from domestic violence, child behavioral problems and PTSD to anxiety, marital conflict and depression.
Clients who are uninsured or under-insured may access services for a sliding scale fee.
“We never turn a person away,” Bouley said.
Counselors can meet with children and adults in the evenings, as well as during the daytime. The center also offers bilingual (Spanish) counseling.
“It's a nonclinical, comfortable atmosphere,” Bouley said.
The nonprofit CEC is a United Way agency, supported by client fees, donations and fundraisers.
