GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Maureen Maznio asked for her friend's mother's mustard recipe 25 years ago, and has made it for family and friends ever since.
For years she's gave away jars of the homemade condiment as Christmas gifts.
Eventually, Maznio had so many requests for the mustard she decided to go into business making and selling the mustard. She founded Molicious Mustard in November.
Maznio and her husband, Steve, made an appointment to talk business with Annalisa Pearson, kitchen manager at the Business Incubator Center. The Incubator helps new and fledgling businesses by offering low-cost classes, free consulting and commercial kitchen space to lease.
Maznio, who recently moved to Glenwood Springs, comes to Grand Junction every three weeks to make big batches of the mustard in the incubator kitchen where she also bottles and labels the sweet and spicy condiment.
“They've really been invaluable,” Maznio said about Incubator staff.
“We talked to Annalisa for six months before we started making our first batch. She put me in the right direction and helped get me up and running.”
A year later, Maznio's Molicious Mustard is sold in Aspen, Glenwood, Eagle and in Grand Junction at Interiors, Etc., 602 Main St. Several restaurants in Glenwood and the Eagle area also use the mustard, Maznio said.
Six ounce jars sell for $5; squeeze bottles are $6 for 9 ounces, and $8 for 12 ounces.
People can also order the mustard from moliciousmustard.com where recipes using the mustard are posted.
“I use it all the time,” Maznio said. “This mustard in particular is kind of a sweet, hot flavor.”
