One of the funnier movies I have seen is “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” and after this last drive to Northern California, I can totally understand the cravings that people get.
Now I knew that In-N-Out Burger now has locations in Salt Lake City from my previous drive to Oregon, but the timing was not right, but I was determined to fully enjoy their gleaming persona, the cleanliness that is second to none, and of course.... a Double-Double, along with the prerequisite fries and chocolate shake! But the timing had to be right!
I left my house before the sun rose, gassed up and loaded my coolers with cheesecakes and dry ice. By this time, it was 7 a.m., things were looking perfect. It takes about four hours to get to Salt Lake, perfect timing for a Double-Double lunch. Not wanting anything to spoil my craving, I just had some yogurt at 5 a.m. and a donut when I picked up the dry ice. I wanted to be real hungry when I got to In-N-Out! I started feeling hungry by the time I turned at White River and headed up Rt. 6 toward Provo, but I was not stopping, except to refill my soda.
Turning onto I-15 North, I could visualize the red sign with the white letters and yellow arrow! I could almost see the perfectly limited menu (just burgers, fries, shakes and beverages); yeah, my stomach was perfectly growling as I turned onto I-215 and headed up to I-80 west. Now I had done my research. I knew that the first location on my travels was actually in Orem, Utah, but it was off the Interstate and I would have gotten there too early. I see the exit for 3300 South/Constitution Blvd. coming up and I swear, I might have started drooling right then. (Not actually, but it makes for good narrative).
I turned off the exit, made a left, and a left on Constitution Avenue and down less than 1/4 mile, there it was.. almost glowing in the pre-noon sun! I pulled into the parking lot — no drive-through this trip — and walked in. I knew what I wanted, no, what I had to have... Double/Double (with onions, of course) small fries and a chocolate shake. Sitting in my truck, I turned on the radio, unwrapped my own little slice of heaven... Yeah, Harold and Kumar would have been proud!
By the by, In-N-Out Burger was just voted the #1 burger chain in the country, but you can only find them in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas and Utah. One stop and you will see why!
Now is this the only craving that I get? Of course not, I get them when I drive to South Jersey (Dino's Cheesesteaks), I get them when I am out in California (Togo's #9 on an Onion Roll), I get them when I drive through Kansas (burgers from the Cozy Inn in Salina).
Where do you get your cravings? Email me with your cravings and we will print them in a future column and will pick one response to give away some cheesecakes!
