Mule Deer 101
Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Colorado Mule Deer Association are teaming up to bring food, fun and lessons about the finer points of hunting muleys at a free Mule Deer 101 seminar scheduled 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 23, at the Parks and Wildlife office, 711 Independent Ave.With door prizes, raffles and free BBQ, the event offers target shooting and hunting classes designed specifically for men, women and youths.
Learn about hunting strategies and techniques during the High Country Mule Deer Tactics class, while women can attend the Ladies on the Hunt class. Taught by women, this seminar encourages questions and discussions about mule deer hunting basics in a female-friendly environment.
Representatives from Cabelas and Prois — a ladies hunting apparel company from Gunnison — will teach several of the classes. Preregister now by calling Mari Myers at 970-255-6144.

Taking reservations
The Western Slope Honor Flight is seeking World War II veterans for its “Fifth and Final” Flight to Washington, D.C., set for Sept. 21-22. Plans are to transport 90-plus WWII veterans from the Western Slope of Colorado and Eastern Utah to visit those memorials built and dedicated in their honor.

Clothing sought
The City of Grand Junction Employees' Association is getting ready for its 20th annual Clothing Give Away 3-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, and 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 6, at Lincoln Park Barn.
The Give Away makes clothing available to those in need, and is especially helpful to those who need clothing for their children as school begins.
The public is invited to make donations of clean, “gently used” clothing. New, in the package, undergarments gladly accepted; shoes with life left in them will be accepted as well.
Clothing donation containers are set up next to the tennis courts at Lincoln Park from now through July 31.

Local educator to attend Library of Congress program
Pamela Middlemas from Grand Junction High School has been selected from a pool of hundreds of applicants to attend the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Summer Teacher Institute.
Each year, the Library of Congress provides the opportunity for a carefully chosen group of K-12 educators to attend one of its seven Teacher Institutes in Washington, D.C.
During the five-day program, participants work with library education specialists and subject matter experts to learn effective practices for using primary sources in the classroom, while exploring some of the millions of digitized historical artifacts and documents available on the library's website.

New appointment
The BLM GJ Field Office and Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado recently appointed Fran Parker as a full-time coordinator to direct volunteers to outdoor stewardship opportunities in the Western Slope region.
