GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Twice a year the Beyond Boundaries Dance Collective presents a dance concert comprised of its members — longtime dancers from the community — as well as some of Mesa State College's finest dance students.
Beyond Boundaries' summer dance concert will be performed July 14-16 at the Mesa Experimental Theatre at Mesa State College.
One of the featured dances in this season's mix of modern and lyrical jazz is a “mini medley” excerpt from a longer piece performed in May by collective members at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen.
For the Aspen show, Beyond Boundaries members Rebecca Fleishman, Melonie Buchanan-Murray, Julie Sinnott and Connie Monroe were chosen to choreograph a set of dances titled “Evolution Movement.” The piece featured a John Lennon character who narrated the production, plus Beatles music.
Fleishman and Buchanan-Murray's choreography will be performed at the Grand Junction show to the Beatles' songs “Revolution,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Blackbird,” and “Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey.”
Another piece in next week's performance is a duet performed to poetry — a precursor of a Performing Arts Festival to be held in Grand Junction in August.
Another piece is indicative of famous Broadway choreographer Bob Fosse, Fleishman said.
Other choreographers include Matthew Lindstrom, Ann Sanders, Laura Bradley and guest artist Ousaphea Hymas Samkara from Boulder.
Proceeds from ticket sales at each of Beyond Boundaries concerts help raise funds for scholarships for MSC dance students to attend workshops and classes.
“Our investment in young dancers is thriving,” Fleishman said.
