GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — People who ride their bikes to work Wednesday, June 22, will be rewarded with a free breakfast in front of Grand Junction City Hall, on the corner of Fifth Street and Rood Avenue.
Local businesses have donated bagels and cream cheese, donuts, fresh fruit, juice and coffee which will be available from 6:30-9:30 a.m. for those who commute that day by bike.
“Bike to Work Day last year had more than 100 participants,” ranging in ages from 3 to 75, said Jennifer Moore of the Urban Trails Committee.
It was a good opportunity for cyclists to meet one another and learn about different corridors to take, Moore said.
A spin-off of the Riverfront Commission, the Urban Trails Committee is a volunteer group that works toward developing infrastructure for hiking, biking and recreation trails throughout the city.
Bike to Work Day is a collaboration of Mesa County, Grand Junction, the Urban Trails Committee, Grand Valley Bikes — a biking advocacy group, and Junk Ride, a monthly community cruiser bike riding group.
Grand Valley Bikes, Junk Ride and Urban Trails share goals of promoting alternative forms of transportation, promoting awareness of cycling as an enjoyable pastime, creating safe conditions for cyclists, and reducing traffic congestion in the Grand Valley.
“It's good to get people out on their bikes and make Grand Junction a more attractive and livable city,” Moore said.
Monday, the city proclaimed June 2011 as Colorado Bike Month and June 22 as Bike to Work Day.
Mesa County Commissioners proclaimed Colorado Bike Month and Bike to Work Day at its public hearing meeting June 6.
