GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Every spring The Art Center holds a national juried exhibit which attracts entries from across the country. This year's Contemporary 2011 exhibit is built around strong bodies of two-dimensional works selected from a variety of artists living and working in the United States.
In past exhibits, most juried artists rarely got more than one piece in the gallery spaces. This year's guest juror Michael Chavez has done something completely different.
“As a viewer of art, I find Michael's method of jurying very satisfying. I love to look at how artists work. When I get to see multiple works of art by an artist I am more likely to understand the preoccupation they have for a subject and have a better understanding of their individual artistic process,” said Camille Silverman, Art Center curator.
This exhibit gives each work room to breath and most of the work is supported by multiple examples by the artists presenting.
Chavez invited Denver area artists with whom he is familiar and had confidence in their ability to pull together an interesting body of work. Their work is complemented by a juried pool of submitting artists that will introduce the community to a whole new range of artists.
The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a gallery talk by juror Michael Chavez and presentation of awards. This will be followed by a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. The Art Center's First Fridays are always free and open to the public with music, hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. The exhibit runs through June 25.
