GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Micaela Folsom of Arete Bookkeeping offers professional organizing for small businesses and nonprofits.
Arete (pronounced Air-uh-tay) is an ancient Greek phrase that means “to live up to your full potential.” It also happens to be Folsom's middle name.
Folsom moved to Grand Junction with her husband in fall 2008 from Glenwood Springs where she still commutes to her job as director of United Way of Garfield County.
She's leaving that position at the end of May to work full-time at her bookkeeping business here in the Grand Valley.
“I was looking to do something here,” Folsom said.
Folsom brings 15 years of experience helping nonprofits and businesses get their paperwork in order.
“A lot of small businesses are really great at what they do but get overwhelmed with the paperwork or how to file things,” Folsom said.
“I can help their businesses run smoother -- especially if they're just starting up. There are a lot of tricks for making setting up easy.”
Folsom said her focus is helping nonprofit organizations and small businesses.
“I understand their unique challenges — either short-term with getting organized, or setting up the system and learning how to use it,” Folsom said.
She's available to do companies' books every month, either on-site or out of her office.
Folsom turned to the Business Incubator Center for guidance in getting her own business off the ground in a new locale. The Incubator is a nonprofit that offers low-cost business classes, free consulting and other services to new and expanding businesses in Mesa County.
“The workshops are fabulous,” as well as the individual counseling, Folsom said.
She said the Incubator gave her ideas on where to find clients. Business counselors there also helped her determine what her rates should be. She rents office space at the Incubator campus, 2591 Legacy Way.
As an Incubator client, Folsom said she was able to join the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce at a discount.
“It's quite a good value,” she said.
