GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — It's definitely not the same market as southern California, but even outdoorsy girls may want to get “dolled up” now and then, professional make-up artist Sandy Raley said. Raley, who owns All Dolled Up Artistry, brings her rolling make-up kit to women's houses to apply a woman's make-up before a prom, a wedding or other special event.
“Thursday, I've been asked to do make-up for a girl going out on the town,” Raley said.
“Weddings are my (main) market,” Raley, 26, said. “Even if you're an outdoor girl, you still want to get dolled up on your day.
“I love weddings. I know what it feels like to be a bride,” Raley said.
Raley's big “day” wasn't that long ago. She's originally from Orange County, Calif., where there's a high demand for her skills and where she trained and worked as a freelancer for Mac Cosmetics. She moved to Fruita two years ago to marry Jason Raley.
The two met at Country Jam, and carried on a long-distance relationship for a year-and-a-half, visiting each other once a month.
For weddings Raley meets with brides once beforehand to do a “run-through” make-up application — “that way they're more comfortable the day of the wedding,” she said.
The trial run “can be the day of the bridal shower; they can use it for a special day,” Raley said.
She also does make-up for bridesmaids and mothers who want it.
Raley uses Mac Cosmetics, a product she said is “high end,” will stay on, is good for the skin and has not been tested on animals.
Her box of tools include eye shadows, foundation, mascara, fake eye lashes, lip sticks, lip liners, moisturizers, eye liners, and powders. She wears a belt containing 15 different brushes.
“From where I'm from, girls go a lot heavier on the make-up,” Raley said. “I've learned to be more cautious out here.”
A magazine photograph can be helpful “so I know what their vision is,” she said.
Raley opened a portfolio showing photographs of different women for whom she's applied make-up.
“One (a woman wearing massive fake eye lashes, pink lipstick and a pink wig) wanted the Lady Gaga look,” Raley said. “As you can see I had some fun with her.”
Generally, though, the goal is not to make a girl look made up.
“I try hard to make girls look naturally beautiful — not overdone,” Raley said.
Raley turned to the Business Incubator Center last fall for help in launching her business in the Grand Valley.
“Mariah (Zerbe) helped me with my website and marketing in general,” Raley said.
Zerbe is a member of the Incubator management team.
The Incubator provides various business courses, low rental space for start-up businesses, and free consulting.
