GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Lace up those sneakers the fourth annual Sweet Heart 5K/10K Run and Health Expo is taking place Saturday, Feb. 12.
Run or walk alone, but participates who bring their valentine can enter into the new “Sweet Heart” category. In this category, times for both participants are added up and the couple with the lowest combined time wins.
Approximately 320 participants have pre-registered, which is more than double amount from 2008 when the event started.
The run is taking place on a new course this year, taking folks on Hwy. 6 and 50 and the Big Salt Wash Trail. Runners will start and end at the new Fruita Community Center, which is also holding its grand opening right before the race. Runners will take their mark at 10 a.m.
First and second place winners are looking at a warm prize — a sweatshirt blanket. Everyone else will be eligible to win at a drawing of their bid number.
“The run and (health) expo started as a partnership with Family Health West to bring awareness to heart and health problems, that's why we paired (them together),” Spokeswoman Kelley Griffin said.
Enjoy a cup of coffee or hot chocolate with some bread and fruit while venturing around the Health Expo. Events include booths from 21 different vendors, such as orthopedics, massage therapy, chiropractors and vets.
Two speakers, Dr. Richard Price with Rocky Mountain Orthopaedic Associates will talk about running with arthritis and Dr. Ellen Price with Family Health West will give a speech titled “Herbs and Barks for Fruits and Nuts.”
The day is expected to be sunny with 45 degree weather.
