GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — As serious musicians, Travis Johnson and Ken McCreanor discovered the high cost of recording music.
So they decided to create their own business, Alchemy Recording Studio in Grand Junction, to offer the service to a wide audience.
“Our goal is to provide quality recording services for musicians of any style, ability and age,” Johnson said.
Alchemy Recording Studio moved into the Business Incubator Center campus in late December where they're in the process of building their studio and should be open for business by Feb. 1.
Johnson, 25, and McCreanor — who turns 23 today — are young but have 15 years of combined experience between them when it comes to engineering and recording music.
Johnson began learning engineering and recording as a Telluride High School student where he studied with mentor Dean Rolley, a highly regarded Telluride engineer, Johnson said.
“I've done a lot of multicultural projects, many types of music genres — styles ranging from acoustic bluegrass to Mexican hip-hop/rap, to a female solo album,” Johnson said. “I've done multiple projects for rock bands and some for my own bands.”
Alchemy Recording Studio can also “provide fill-in studio musicians,” McCreanor said.
The two musicians met while playing in Telluride-based bands. They eventually left to form their own band “Beyond Society” in Grand Junction. Other bandmates include bassist John Biocic and lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Brandon Cardera.
Johnson plays guitar and mandolin; McCreanor is a drummer and keyboardist.
“We are studio musicians as well as engineers,” Johnson said.
Alchemy Recording is capable of providing clients with a live session where each musician is recorded simultaneously in a separate room, or, individuals can be recorded one at a time — with Johnson and McCreanor putting it all together.
Johnson and McCreanor said the Incubator has been a big help in starting their business.
The Incubator is a nonprofit organization that serves new and expanding Mesa County businesses by offering low-cost business classes, free counseling and affordable rent.
“They found clients for us right off the bat,” McCreanor said.
Coincidentally, Alchemy Recording moved into the same building and room that McCreanor's parents rented a few years ago when they started their business, White Star Electric. That business has since moved to another location just south of downtown Grand Junction.
The Incubator campus is located at 2591 B 3/4 Road on Orchard Mesa.
