This weekend, many of us will be enjoying what some call the 'last' weekend of summer, some even stretching it to a 3- or 4-day weekend. For some, it signals the end of the barbecue season, though for the life of me, I cannot understand why, unless you are living up in the Arctic, but then, you probably won't be reading this.
From the United States Department of Labor website: "Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."
Yeah, it might have lost of some it's meaning to most people, but for one group of people that I may have some understanding of - the kitchen workers, chefs, waiters, waitresses, hosts and hostesses, the line cooks, the dishwashers and the list goes on - these people deserve a day where they can look back and be proud of what they do, they feed us, day in, day out and from one in the industry, I thank you.
Folks, until you have worked a grill for an eight-plus hour shift, until you have schlepped and served 100 tables in a day, (and I know you may not believe it, but not all diners are gracious), until you, well you get my train of thought. Now I am not saying that other professions are not equally worthy (teachers jump right to the top of my thoughts), but for those of you in our industry, I salute you. Enjoy your day.
Now out on the Jersey Shore where I grew up, the Labor Day weekend marked the end of the summer season (and we just hoped that the people who came down for the summer to our beaches and left virtually every vestige of their lunches on the sand, never found out the rest of September are some of the best days at the beach), the end of the 'tourist' season, which started on the Memorial Day weekend, the time where if your business cannot make it for the year, you won't be in business next season, it is also when us locals had our “Shoobies Go Home” parties! If you don't know what a Shoobie is, chances are, you may not be one, but if you Google that term, you never know what you may find out.
Our food website of the week is from our friends at The Asbury Park Press, and while that is a little north of where I grew up, what the heck, it gave us Bruce Springsteen -http://www.asburyboardwalk.com/recipes.htm
We are also going to having the first Decadence Gourmet Cheesecakes, “Cheesecake Tasting Competition,” for the benefit of Kids Aid/Backpacks for Kids Program on Sept. 23. Visit our Facebook page for more information!
