He said: Last week I was listening to a 20-something ask what day it was. He was about three days behind and exclaimed that he didn't know where the time goes. Notwithstanding the song by that name, I know. As we age, time is sucked into a black hole at an increasing rate. You cannot grab hold of it. It seems to be noon before I really get started, and then I am ready for my nap.
She said: That's only because you care about time. I think you don't know how to relax or lose yourself in a feeling of the past. You are addicted to activity. You are always doing something, like packing for a trip three days ahead of time or starting on a task weeks before it's due.
As you know, I tend to not remember what day it is or to pay attention to the time. Time is an artificial invention to take control and manipulate the flow of life. I like to wallow in the past, on occasion, because it feels good and familiar. Memories give me confidence to take risks in the future in an attempt to renew some of the incredible feelings of the past. Music is one such experience. I lose track of time when I get wrapped up in music and conjure up flashbacks a song might bring. I think these days we get too wrapped up in our electronic planners and alarms. We listen only to the ring tones and tweets, not the whole song. We sing solos instead of being part of choruses.
He said: Well, I know where your time goes even if you do not; into reading a pile of pulp fiction. A little addiction to movement would help some of the pains you have. All of that thinking doesn't do a bit of good if it doesn't result in some positive activity. Obtaining food, drink and going on the vacations you enjoy so much are all things rooted in the great forward flow of time.
She said: Just because you cannot identify exactly what I am thinking about or see what I am working on does not mean that I am not ruminating and planning. I write a lot of things in my head and rewrite them a million times before I put them on paper. It may look last minute to you, but it only illustrates that there are different ways to solve problems and to deal with, or not deal with time.
Besides, physicists are now positing that the future may have already determined what the past will be. The “Discovery” article reported it is something about the quantum impact of the future on the present. So much for your forward flow of time. My reading of spy novels must be preparing me for something in my future. It's predetermined that I should read them. Neo-physicists say that your goal setting is only part of the predestined fate. So why worry?
He said: I'll tell you why. One of the mysteries of life is that our cells, especially heart cells, divide only some many times and then stop. It is like having a ticker in each cell and when it reaches zero, no more you. How we use the minutes are up to us. Your life is on a timer whether you want it to be or not.
When I was young, we wiled away the time sitting on the porch. Now I can't imagine how anyone has any time to sit and just contemplate. But I wouldn't want to trade away those minutes of youth. Would you trade away your pulp fiction minutes?
She said: Make up your mind. You can wish or you can do. Speaking of which, it is the mind that assigns value to our experiences. You were just chastising me for spending those minutes reading. I need those minutes because that is how I recharge my batteries. I chose to take the time rather than answer e-mails. Maybe that will soothe those cells with the limited life spans so they will fire longer. Besides, I'm addicted to reading. Your addiction, fishing, which should be relaxing, is now a competitive sport that has you all nervous trying to predict the weather and the lures. You seem more addicted to the rush of the contest.
He said: Don't you understand that I could live on the lake watching the seasons change and nature going forward in its own way, rather than the human way. There time is circular. Season after season. Always different and always the same.
She said: Now you want me to waste my precious time thinking about that? Go play with your lures, I'm going to read.
