• A new gondola installed by Grand Junction's own Leitner-Poma of America Inc. has opened at Steamboat Ski Resort.

The gondola covers a 2,000-foot distance to the resort's base in four minutes and will feature four groups of two, six-passenger cabins for a capacity of 340 people per hour.

After pouring footings in October, Leitner-Poma secured the 10 towers in place in November, paving the way for February's grand opening.

Manufacturing ropeway systems for the ski, amusement park and urban transport industries, Leitner-Poma is a North American subsidiary of France's Pomagalski S.A. and Italy's Leitner Technologies. The company has supplied lifts for four Winter Olympics, including this fall's installation of a 250-foot wind turbine tower atop Grouse Mountain in Vancouver for NBC's Olympic coverage. The Wildhorse Gondola represents the company's third project in Steamboat.

• Gold's Gym has a personal trainer who specializes in triathlon conditioning.

Jim Ettenger currently works with about 12 members and gym employees who are training for events ranging from the Highline Hustle to full triathlons.

For two years he was coach for the Junior National Developmental Triathlon Team, a group of boys and girls who are ranked 6-18 nationally. Prior to that he competed in triathlons competitively for 10 years, four of those professionally, ranking 13th nationally.

Ettenger says he focuses on two components while training for any event, whether it's sprint-distance races, triathlons, marathons or biking events: physical and mental adaptation.

“Training volume is the No. 1 priority just so you can complete the distance,” he says. The other priority is learning proper form for the three events.

For more information, contact Ettenger at 985-1424.

Happy 20th anniversary in GJ!

After the purchase of their first bank in 1983, Don and Susan Sturm acquired two existing savings and loans in Grand Junction in February 1990. The purchase of Mesa Federal Savings and Loan and Valley Federal Savings and Loan established American National Bank's presence in western Colorado.

Since that first bank purchase in 1983, the Sturms have built a successful network of banks — now in four states: Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas and Missouri. The banking group, the Sturm Financial Group, consists of 42 banking centers with $2 billion in assets.

Don and Susan's plans for the future are to continue to expand the banking group through existing bank locations and new market opportunities as well. Exceptional customer service is the #1 priority in the continuing enhancement of products, systems and personal service to fulfill customers' banking needs.
