AVON, Colo. — Authorities have accused a Minturn woman of head-butting an Avon police officer.
Jessica Darlene Estes, 31, faces assault charges in connection with a scuffle outside Finnegan's Wake in Avon.
Police responded to the bar around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, where a woman claimed Estes had assaulted her, an Avon police report said.
The woman said she and her friends were laughing and talking in the bar's bathroom when Estes told them to “Shut the [expletive] up,” the report said. The woman said Estes continued to yell at her and her friends later in the evening.
The woman claimed that when she left Finnegan's Wake, Estes walked up to her in the parking lot and punched her twice, knocking her to the ground and pulling her hair, the report said.
Officer Jeffrey Briggs reported that as he was attempting to double-lock handcuffs on Estes, she tried to turn around and talk to another officer, the report said. Briggs reported that he pushed Estes against the car. That's when the alleged head butt took place, the report said.
Officer Mike Lundblade reported that he heard Briggs yell “stop resisting” and saw him push Estes up against the patrol car.
“Estes flung her head back very hard head butting Officer Briggs,” Lundblade said in the report.
Lundblade observed that Briggs “appeared to be in pain as he kept feeling his forehead, checking to see if he was bleeding,” the report said.
Briggs reported that he felt throbbing by his left eyebrow and felt the area swell up, although it wasn't bleeding, the report said.
According to the report, Lundblade said Estes stiffened up and refused to get into the patrol car, so he performed a defensive knee strike to her upper thigh to get her to comply, the report said.
The stun did not affect Estes, the report said. Lundblade wrote that he grabbed Estes by the back of the head and pushed her into the car, the report said.
The most serious charge facing Estes is “second degree assault — police officer,” Deputy District Attorney Ryan Kalamaya said. If she pleads guilty or is found guilty, the penalty would range from five to 16 years in jail, he said.
“We take all assaults on our police officers very seriously so we would be looking for the district attorney to be prosecuting her to the full extent of the law,” Avon Police Lt. Greg Daly said.
Other charges facing Estes include third degree assault, a misdemeanor that can lead to up to 1 1/2 years in jail, Kalamaya said. Maximum punishments for the other charges Estes faces include 6 months in jail for disorderly conduct and one year in jail for resisting arrest, he said.
Estes was released from the Eagle County jail Wednesday morning on $7,500 bail, jail administrator Bill Kaufman said.
