Locally, not much time passed between the devastating earthquake in Haiti Jan. 12 and organized fundraising efforts in Western Colorado.
No real surprise, but still admirable to see how quickly folks responded and in so many creative ways.
One of the first campaigns out of the gate came from school children. The kids at Clifton Elementary school moved into high gear with their “Rally for Haiti Penny Drive.” In no time flat, they had a good-size bucket placed in a strategic location at the school and were tossing in loose change (with approval from parents, of course) all in an effort to collect money to send to UNICEF's relief effort.
Local restaurants, artists, churches, other schools and non-profit organizations eagerly jumped in to help.
The Haitian government is now estimating the death toll at 200,000, with two million homeless and approximately 250,000 in need of urgent care. Mesa County is doing its part alongside international efforts from the Red Cross, the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and UNICEF.
The children at Clifton Elementary got it right in the words displayed on the collection bucket. “Our neighbors in Haiti need our help. One penny at a time.”
Locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, that will add up.
