Hospice volunteer needs
If you are interested in any of the following volunteer opportunities with Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, call Diane Dickey, 257–2378:
• Hospice Care Center Reception - Be the smiling face to greet people. One Sunday a month, 9 a.m. to noon.
• Heirlooms for Hospice Store - Be a sales associate in our upscale resale shop. Half-day weekly. Thurs. morning, Sat. morning, or Sat. afternoon shifts available. Seamstress also needed. Pick up items and take them home to work on. Flexible hours.
• Information Technology - Basic computer data entry experience is required. Half-day weekly.
• Patient Support at Hospice Care Center - Our patients need volunteers to provide companionship Saturdays or Sundays, half-day weekly.
• Pet Therapy - You and your pet therapy dog are needed to visit our patients. Flexible hours!
• Accounting - Computer work, folding, stuffing, labeling, copying for Billing Dept. Half day, twice weekly.
• Payroll - Computer work, processing paperwork. 8 hours a week.
Be a travel counselor
The Colorado Welcome Center in Fruita is recruiting volunteers to help greet the public as they travel through our state and offer a friendly hello and a free hot cup of coffee, along with travel and tourism information. Volunteer travel counselors have opportunities during the year to attend events and study tours throughout the state. New counselors will receive training and uniforms and will have a great time being part of an elite team of people who are passionate about the state of Colorado. Rescue and Adoption Center
CLAWS (Cats League and Assistance of the Western Slope) is looking for volunteers to help at their new “cats only” shelter, 2214 Sanford Drive # A5. There are wonderful cats of all ages, sizes and colors who would love your attention! Volunteer opportunities include: cleaning living areas, feeding etc., assisting with local adoption events, helping with fund raisers, and providing temporary foster homes. They always appreciate (and need) your donations especially Purina Indoor and Science Diet for adults and Purina Kitten Chow, cat litter of any kind, toys and cat beds. AARP Sponsored Tax-Aide Program
Looking for volunteers to help provide free federal and state tax preparation for low-to-middle income taxpayers of any age using an easy-to-use tax program called “Tax Wise.”
There will be a 4-day training session from Jan. 12-15 and actual preparations run from Feb. 1-April 15. Most volunteers work a 9-noon or noon-3 shift once or twice a week, but this is flexible. There is no experience or tax background required. The program is also looking for donated desktop computers, call for minimum requirements. For more info contact John at 523-8083.

Mesa Developmental Services is looking for volunteers who want to work in a fun and diverse environment. Become an adaptive ski or snowboard Instructor! CO Discover Ability is the adaptive Snowsports School at Powderhorn Resort. If you are 55+ and love children, you may be able to volunteer in a child care center or head start school, earn a stipend that does not affect Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid plus other benefits, and build a social network with other volunteers. A different kind of volunteer experience
The Colorado Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is seeking ombudsman volunteers to serve as advocates for residents in assisted living facilities and nursing homes in Mesa County. This is a challenging volunteer experience that makes a real difference in the lives of our elderly residents. Requesting a one year commitment and will provide you with extensive training to perform this volunteer task. If you would like more information, call Robb Huff at 243-7940, ext. 111.
American Red Cross
The Western Colorado Chapter of the American Red Cross is recruiting new volunteers to begin this fall. If you are interested in assisting with disaster response, health and safety or support of our Armed Forces program, call 242-4851.
Outreach Program for seniors
A collaborative team made up of various agencies including the Mesa County Area Agency on Aging, Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program and the Adult Resources for Care and Help is looking for volunteers to participate in a special outreach project.
Volunteers will help enroll seniors and persons with disabilities in the Low-income Subsidy, the Extra Help Program or the Medicare Savings Program.
Volunteer duties will include recruitment at outreach fairs and events, as well as direct outreach and recruitment efforts to individuals in our community.
Volunteers must be willing to attend training sessions and be available at least two hours per week for enrollment assistance.
Volunteers must have excellent interpersonal communication skills, basic computer skills, and the ability to read forms and help clients understand what information is needed to complete the forms.

Alpine Hospice
Alpine Hospice serves patients in Mesa, Garfield, Pitkin, Delta, Montrose, Ouray and San Miguel counties.
Volunteers are needed in each of our service areas to provide direct support to patients, including companionship, reading, running errands, playing board games, birthday recognition and a variety of other tasks.
If you have a heart for hospice, we have a volunteer opportunity that will fit you. If you have a few hours to give each week, or even once a month call Sandy at 245-0188 to join the dynamic and caring team at Alpine Hospice.
Riverside Educational Center
Local nonprofit that provides after-school tutoring and enrichment services for K-12 students.
The REC is recruiting volunteer tutors to assist students with their homework and other basic reading and math skills. It is open from 4:15-6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
