C'mon, you can do it, and then afterward I promise you can eat all the pumpkin pie you want!
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Can you think of a better way to start Thanksgiving Day than a run, jog or casual walk along the beautiful Colorado River?
Hundreds of runners and walkers like that idea and are expected to participate in the Third Annual Grand Junction 5K Turkey Trot, which starts at 9 a.m. Thursday near Soar Physical Therapy. Last year's event attracted about 350 participants.
All proceeds from the event benefit the Grand Junction Fire Department Local 2808, which helps family members of fallen or injured firefighters.
“It's a great foundation,” said Jason Whitesides with the City of Grand Junction Fire Department, adding that 100 percent of the funds go to the firefighters union to assist families in need across the country.
The 5K (3.1 mile) course is scenic and not terribly challenging. Everyone is welcome, from families to competitive runners. Strollers and leashed animals are also OK.
“Hopefully, it will appeal to a lot of families,” Whitesides said. An award will be presented to the group that registers the highest number of family members. One family has already signed up with 34 people. Prizes will be awarded for other categories as well.
The Grand Junction 5K Turkey Trot was started three years ago by Eric Moyer and Bryan and Jason Whitesides. The purpose of the event is to promote healthy living and to raise money for an important cause.
Online preregistration is available through today at www.gjturkeytrot.org. Anyone registering today will be guaranteed a Turkey Trot T-shirt. Preregistration costs are $20 for adults, $15 for kids under 12, and $15 per person for a family of four.
Day of registration is 7:45-8:30 a.m., and the cost is $25 for adults and $20 for kids under 12. Depending on remaining inventory, T-shirts may or may not be available for day of registration. Last year's T-shirts will be available to purchase for just $5.
Soar Physical Therapy is located at 2497 Power Road, behind Albertsons in the Redlands. The Grand Junction Turkey Trot is sponsored by the Grand Junction Free Press, Soar Physical Therapy, Betterrunner.com, Single Track Bike Shop, Mountain Sprouts and Loki.
