Have you ever experienced a blogging emergency? Who do you call on http://www.BloggingEmergency.com of course!
Dear Moxie Maven:
I have a Facebook fan page now, but why is it that I can't see my own posts from the fan page. I am a fan of my own page so shouldn't I see them along with all the posts from my friends?
— Fan Away
Dear Fan Away:
Makes sense to me!
Yet, here's the real scoop. The first thing that happens is Facebook knows that you are connected up with your fan page and understands that you probably don't need that information reposted in your own news feed.
Just so you understand, your news feed is created uniquely for you based on what your friends are saying, no one else sees this feed the same way that you do. When you click on the link for home, it will always take you back to your news feed.
This is different than when you click on your profile and where you will see your wall. Depending on how you have your privacy settings, this is what people who visit will see.
When you created your fan page there is an invisible wall created between your profile and the fan page. This separation is actually a very good thing. But, at first, it can seem a little strange.
The first thing to understand is that when you post something to your own personal wall, maybe it is photos from the birthday party you attended this past weekend, those that are fans of your fan page will not see the pictures. In this example, only your friends will see the pictures.
Take that one step further, and when you post something to your fan page your personal friends will only see that post if they are fans of the page.
If you have people that are friends, and different people that are fans and you have information that you want everyone to see, then you will need to post that information in both places.
The good news is that there are tools that can make this easier for you. As a matter of fact, www.ping.fm is a great tool that will allow you to post to all your social media sites, including not only your personal profile, but your fan page as well.
In previous columns I have addressed the time saving factor of using tools like Ping.fm. Each individual will need to find their own way when it comes to what tools they feel comfortable using, just make sure that you find a tool that will allow you to post to both your personal profile and your fan page at the same time, so you won't have to duplicate your efforts.
In the end what you need to understand is that Facebook tries to be smart by giving you the content that you think is relevant. It does this in many ways through the status updates it shows to you in the news feed, the advertising on the right hand side, and the suggestions of friends.
When you are not seeing something that would normally expect to see there will one of two things going on.
The first is simply that it is your own page and Facebook thinks you wrote it, so you don't need to see it. The second is that your settings may need to be modified in order for you to see the content that you are expecting, and that my friend is a whole new article.
