Robert Lasater holds an example of one of the books his business, Six Degrees Leadership, sends to its subscribers.
Each week the Free Press profiles a business that has used the services of the Grand Junction Business Incubator Center, a nonprofit organization that offers a range of entrepreneurial services to new and expanding businesses.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Six Degrees Leadership is a new business geared toward helping people network and build relationships to further their personal and professional development. Robert Lasater of Moab and Kevin Mogavero of Phoenix formed the business in 2009 and use Grand Junction as its distribution center where meetings and workshops are held and materials distributed.
“Our focus is helping people develop social capital which is measured in two ways,” by the number of relationships you have with people, and the depth and level of trust held in those relationships, Lasater said.
“People with real success always find depth in their relationships,” Lasater said.
Six Degrees Leadership's website quotes American businessman and philanthropist Warren Buffett: “Business is relationship.”
“The crux of what we do is teach people to create an environment quickly that establishes high-trust relationships and networks,” Lasater said.
Lasater said Six Degrees does that by conducting meetings where attendees are encouraged to discuss core values.
People find their professional relationships widen by connecting with others through conversation, especially around core values, or “causes,” Lasater said.
Brown bag leadership meetings are held every Tuesday in Grand Junction at Major Mortgage, 2474 Patterson Road, from noon to 1 p.m. Six Degrees Leadership meetings are also held each week in Delta, Cedaredge, Montrose and Phoenix.
The business earns income through $20 a month subscriptions which include “mini” books on success sent monthly to subscribers, and workshops, also monthly, led by various other “experts,” Lasater said.
Six Degrees has 150 subscribers thus far, Lasater said.
As a new business, Six Degrees Leadership consulted The Business Incubator Center, 2591 B 3/4 Road, for advice on how to run its business.
“We used the Incubator primarily for feedback,” Lasater said.
The Incubator offers free consulting, as well as low-cost business classes and access to small business loans.
“We wanted their eyes and ears,” Lasater said. “They like numbers. They like to see all the numbers are working. They help keep us grounded.”
