GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Mesa County Health Department is expanding the priority groups who can schedule H1N1 vaccination appointments this week. The group is expanded to include individuals 5-64 years of age who have chronic medical conditions; the 1,000 available appointments were previously limited to individuals 5-24 years with chronic medical conditions.
The appointments are available for Tuesday November 10th 1:00pm-6:00pm and Thursday November 12th 9:00am-2:00pm.
Individuals must be in the following group to schedule a vaccination appointment:
• 5 through 64 years of age with a chronic medical condition (immune suppression, chronic kidney disease, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, asthma or other problems of the lungs, sickle cell disease, those on long-term aspirin therapy for chronic disorders, conditions that affect respiratory function including neurological conditions such as intellectual and developmental disability, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, seizure disorders, metabolic conditions or other neuromuscular disorders).
Here is how someone 5-64 years of age with a chronic medical condition can schedule an appointment:
• Online: Visit the Mesa County Health Department's website at www.health.mesacounty.us <http://www.health.mesacounty.us/> and click on the red button that says “Schedule H1N1 Vaccine Appointment.”
• Telephone: If you do not have internet access, you can call the Health Department at 683-6636 to schedule an appointment. (Staff will be available to schedule appointments on Tuesday at 8:00am until appointments are filled.)
The amount and type of vaccine the Health Department receives in each shipment dictates which priority groups can be vaccinated. This is a complicated process because it involves different H1N1 vaccine manufacturers that produce vaccines approved for varying age groups and health conditions. Dr. Aduddell, Director of Mesa County Health Department states, “We feel that together with our health care partners, we have reached many individuals in the initial priority groups and can now expand the groups based on the quantity and the type of vaccine available.”
All other routine immunization activities at Mesa County Health Department will be suspended on Tuesday and Thursday. The Health Department is closed on Wednesday, November 11th, in observance of Veteran's Day.
