Dear Moxie Maven
I put my company on Facebook. Now how do I get more people to pay attention? It really doesn't do much when all the people I'm connected with are employees.
Fan Free
Dear Fan Free,
Before we go too far, I want to clarify something. Facebook expects that you will create a personal profile, and then you will create a fan page for your business based on your personal profile. I have seen many businesses create a profile using their business name, and this really is against the terms of service of Facebook.
It is not like Facebook is policing this policy, but it is good to know that it exists and that the consequence could mean that you would have your profile shut down.
The alternative is to set up a profile in your name; this does not mean that you have to use this profile for anything other than personal use. This could be the place that you connect up with friends and family, but not customers or clients.
Once you have your personal profile set up you can create a fan page for your business. This is easily done by looking at the bottom of your personal profile and finding the little talk bubbles with a letter ‘F' inside. This will lead to fan pages and advertising.
Now that you have a fan page created the next thing to understand is that those that are your personal friends will not see what you post on your fan page, and those on your fan page will not see what you post on your personal profile. Unless — there is an exception — the person is both a friend and a fan of your page.
This is actually a very important concept so you can feel comfortable with what you discuss on each page. There really is a big line between the two pages, even though the fan page is associated with your personal page.
With the fan page up, the next question is always, “How do I get more people to be a fan?”
There are many ways, some far more effective than others. In some cases you may consider Facebook advertising. However, for gaining fans you will usually end up with far more clicks that you pay for than fans.
Here are five ways to proudly display that your business is on Facebook:
1. Consider a sign in your store asking people to become your fan on Facebook.
2. Think about everywhere you have your Web site and add a reminder to find you on Facebook (business card, signs, advertising, etc.).
3. Use other social media sites to cross promote, even using contests to drive new people to your fan page.
4. Put links on your Web site, or better yet get a badge and put it on your Web site.
5. Add a link in your e-mail signature to get just that little bit of added awareness that you are on Facebook.
In general, getting fans on Facebook is about telling people that you are there.
One final word, once you have 25 fans get a user name for your fan page to make it even easier to direct people there.
Go to www.facebook.com/username, and it will first ask for your personal profile's user name, then it will display a link that will allow you to create a user name for your fan page.
Once that is done it will be much easier because all you have to say is come join me on Facebook, simply go to www.facebook.com/moxdom. Of course, it would be your business name at the end.
