Let us not be ‘sheep' any longer

It's been said, all the world's a stage and we are merely players. However on the political stage, it may be more accurately stated that we are being played.

I recently read the following statements which rang very true to me.

“The Founders thought that laws should be made by a body of elected officials with roots in local communities. They should not be experts, but they should have ‘most wisdom to discern, and most virtue to pursue, the common good of the society' (Madison)… Others have wanted to sweep away what they regarded as this amateurism in politics. … Politics was regarded as too complex for common sense to cope with.”

Personally, I prefer to align with Madison and his contemporaries, men who struggled to create the greatest nation and governing document this world has ever known. Whether on the national, state, or local scene, people have grown weary of professional “politicians” with preconceived notions of right and wrong, unwilling to hear any utterances from their constituency to the contrary.

Rather than representing the people, so many of our “leaders” have transformed into Zen-like masters of gaming the system for personal gain, all the while heaping endless taxes, debt, and onerous regulations on the very people whose interests they claim as their highest priority.

Thomas Jefferson once stated, “make yourselves sheep and the wolves will eat you.” For too long, we have been sheep, believing our elected representatives would ultimately do what is right. Unfortunately we've been wrong. Now, we look for leaders with the most wisdom to discern, and most virtue to pursue, the common good of the society. Such is not idealistic fancy, it is practical leadership of this nature for which we shall watch, and ultimately make our choices known and voices heard.
