How can we be sure food produced in China is safe?

After the massive recall of toys with lead-based paint a few years ago, the equally worrying recall of tainted pet food, and news last year of poisoned baby food killing children, why are we still importing food from China?

Why is salmon caught in Alaskan waters processed in China before being imported back into the United States? Wouldn't it create jobs if we processed Alaskan fish in Alaska or Washington? Why are Walmart and other retailers selling Halloween candy made in China?

I do not mind purchasing food from other countries. I love Italian olive oil and Coke made in Mexico. It is next to impossible avoiding medications made elsewhere. But if the Food and Drug Administration is having difficulty monitoring safe food production in our own country, how can they possibly oversee such production in China? Or ensure that medications we import from India, Indonesia and other countries are safe to use?

Jobs would be created by placing more FDA inspectors in the field at home and abroad. Yes it would cost more, both in taxes and retail prices, but it would be money well spent.

For many Americans, reading food labels for nutritional content has become a habit. Now we must add the country of origin to the decision process, “Do I really want my child to eat this?”
