Fossil found in Fruita named smallest dinosaur by scientists

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Scientists say fossil bones housed at a Los Angeles museum belong to the smallest dinosaur discovered in North America.

Luis Chiappe (chee-AH-peh), director of the Dinosaur Institute of the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles, said Tuesday that the newly identified creature weighed less than two pounds and stood about 2 feet tall.

It likely ate plants and hunted bugs during the late Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago.

Chiappe and an international team recently identified and named it Fruitadens haagarorum after the Colorado city of Fruita where it was found three decades ago and for Paul Haaga, president of the museum board of trustees.

A description of the dinosaur will appear Wednesday in the British journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences.

Few changes in Safeway, union contract talks

DENVER (AP) — Safeway and unionized Colorado grocery workers aren't any closer to a new contract after a fresh day of talks, with pension benefits remaining a contentious issue.

Safeway said negotiators for United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 presented a proposal Tuesday that isn't much different from one made in September, so Safeway isn't willing to change its position either.

UFCW Local 7 says Safeway hasn't been willing to meet workers halfway. The workers' last long-term contract expired in May.

The union represents about 17,000 workers at Safeway, King Soopers, City Market and Albertsons.

Safeway workers have voted to authorize a strike if talks deteriorate.

No new negotiation dates have been set.

Chipotle adding solar panels to some restaurants

DENVER (AP) — Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. plans to add solar panels on about 75 of its restaurants over the next year.

The Denver-based fast-casual chain said Tuesday that it is partnering with Houston-based Standard Renewable Energy to install enough panels to produce 500 kilowatt hours of electricity.

Installations are already under way in Denver and in Texas, in Austin, Dallas and San Antonio. No word yet if the Grand Junction Chipotle will get solar panels.

Chipotle says the goal is to reduce how much traditional energy the restaurants use from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., when demand for energy is greatest.

Chipotle has had other “green” initiatives. Its restaurant in Gurnee, Ill., has a wind turbine on site and an underground cistern to harvest rainwater for irrigation.
