Clinton “Rocky” Peterson Jr.

July 30, 1962 – Sept. 24, 2009

On Sept. 24, 2009 Rocky lost his battle with cancer. He was 47. He was born on July 30, 1962 in Rawlins, Wyo., to Joan and Clint Peterson and later moved to Colorado in 1963.

Rocky was raised in Grand Junction and graduated from Central High School, Class of 1980. Growing up, Rocky enjoyed participating in little league baseball, Pewee wrestling and basketball. He wrestled on the Central High State Champion team and lettered in football.

While in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in England, he won the Freestyle Wrestling Championship/Great Britain Armed Forces. While there he played football for the semi-pro team The Swindon Steelers.

He joined the Air Force in 1980, retiring in 2004 as Master Sergeant/Intel. He began his career as a jet engine mechanic and flew as a crew member on B52 bombers.

His squadron relieved the British Air Force in England when the Falklands War began. He was assigned to an air refueling wing that went to the Gulf War. From his assignment with the stealth fighter he transferred to Intelligence. His primary assignment was target setting, doing this from 9/11 until his retirement.

After retirement Rocky worked as the parts and service manager for Grand West Kia.

Rocky loved his Lord, his family, his country and the Colorado outdoors. He enjoyed sipping a brew with friends at the Rockslide Brew Pub.

He was a member of VFW Post 1247 and a member of the Grand Mesa Bowmen. Rocky married Kim Gaymon in 1982. Their children are Heather, Sam and Dan. Rocky and Kim later divorced. Rocky later remarried to Dawnel Klemm.

Rocky leaves behind his wife Dawnel; a daughter, Heather Peterson of Grand Junction; two sons, Samuel Peterson of Council Bluffs Iowa, and Daniel (Amanda Rezak), U.S.S. San Francisco SSN 711, San Diego, Calif.; step children, Christina, Brooke, Brittany and Evin; his parents, Joan and Clinton Peterson Sr. of Grand Junction; a sister, Deborah (Sid) Veale; and a favorite nephew, Clay Veale all of Palisade, Colo.; and niece Cydney (Max) Lujan of Camp LeJeune, N.C.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sept. 29 at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado.

Memorial contributions may be given in lieu of flowers to The Grand Valley Combined Honor Guard, 2830 D Road, Grand Junction, Colo. 81501, or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, 309 B N. 12th Street, Grand Junction, Colo. 81506.

Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Martin Mortuary.
