In the hidden corners of our society, there are those people who silently reach out to help others. Helping others is the task of a group of ladies at Monument Baptist Church in Grand Junction, who use their extra hours sewing blankets and giving “onesies” shirts to newborns at St. Mary's Hospital.
Here's how it works. Some donate the money to buy the fabric. Others sit at their sewing machines and whip out the blankets. Marinelle Green takes the blankets to a St. Mary's representative and everyone receives a burst of joy for their efforts.
Since the initial undertaking of this project, there have been 130 blankets delivered to the babes in arms. The tiny little shirts, known as “onesies,” are tucked into the blanket for an additional heart warmer.
It's a quiet action without pomp, but the effort is rewarding. Every newborn receives the gift. Sometimes there are moms, who are teenagers, without a layette for the baby.
Other moms may be a homeless person without funds to supply the baby's needs. Still others may be financially secure, but the gift offers to each one a special moment for mom and baby.
It's all about people helping people, and hard to tell just who receives the most from the action.
