Talking permits & uranium

Meet at Friendship Hall, 1001 N. 2nd, Montrose, 9am, Sept. 9, to discuss concerns regarding a special use permit for Pinon Ridge Uranium Mill. Donate blood

St. Mary's Bloodmobile will be hosting two blood drives this month: Sept. 17, 5pm, Downtown Farmers Market GJ 6th & Main St.; and Sept. 26, noon-4pm, Fruita Fall Festival. Info: call 244-2555.

BLM seeking toilet vandals

Law enforcement rangers with the BLM are looking for the vandals who damaged a vault toilet at the Flat Top off-highway vehicle staging area off of 6530 Road northeast of Montrose sometime between Aug. 21-22. An unknown explosive device was dropped into the vault toilet at the staging area, causing close to $2,000 in damages.

“This senseless act of vandalism is not just disrespectful, it will also cost the taxpayers almost $2,000 to clean up,” said Barb Sharrow, manager of the BLM Uncompahgre Field Office. Tips are welcomed to Jim Maloney at 970-240-5330.

DUI diaries

Gathered from MCSO and GJPD reports, here are the latest alleged intoxicated drivers: James Young, 22; Seth Anthony Shroder, 21; Jason Anderson, 37; Kelly C. King, 26; Kristina Lee Gragg, 49; Clark Phillips, 50.

New FREE theater program for students

Creative Avenues, 128 S. 5th, is committed to providing theater education and performance opportunities for all students regardless of financial circumstances. The first project will be “Great Expectations” for students in grades 6-12, auditions Tues., Sept. 15, from 7-8:30. Info: 255-6757.

A worry-free adventure

Colorado National Monument is inviting the public to walk, stroll, jog or bicycle along 14 miles of Rim Rock Drive without motorized traffic on National Public Lands Day, Sat., Sept. 26. Pets are welcome, but must remain on a leash. Entrance will be free on this day but donations will be accepted for the park's 100th anniversary in 2011. Info: 858-3617, x364.

Double rebates

Xcel Energy announced recently it would double rebates for its residential natural gas customers who purchase and install insulation between Sept. 1 and Oct. 15, 2009. The program includes insulation for attics and walls, as well as air sealing and weather-stripping. Maximum payback of $600. Rebate forms due by Nov. 15. Info: www.xcelenergy.com.
