GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Up With People brings an “all-star alumni cast” (plus 10 members of the current cast of Up With People) to the Mesa County Fair for a performance Sunday afternoon.
Up With People was founded in 1965 as a positive voice for young people. Young people ages 17 to 29, from all over the world come together to perform music for the purpose of delivering messages of “hope and goodwill.” Community service work is also part of the group's mission.
Sunday's performance will feature newly released music including “Power With,” a song about empowerment; “Arm Yourself,” lyrics promoting education; and “With One Heart,” a song about the environment.
The show will also feature “international songs and dances from all over the world — places where we go and where students are from,” said Eric Lentz, producer, director and emcee.
Lentz toured with Up With People for three years during the late 1980s, after college.
It's a post-high school program, Lentz said. Many of the performers take semesters off college to tour with the group. Some are fresh out of high school, while others have their doctorate degrees.
Performers tour for six months, visiting countries all over the world.
Up with People has visited 3,600 communities in 38 countries.
The family-geared show will last about an hour.
