Holiday weekend calendar

SATURDAY

8 a.m.-noon — Fruita Farmers Market, Fruita Civic Center Lawn, Aspen Ave. Fresh produce, local artisans, great entertainment. Info: 241-2089.

9:30 a.m. Terry Grosz book signing, Vega State Park Visitors Center. Meet the author throughout the day and watch the Animal Planet movie, “Wildlife Wars” based on Grosz's life.

10 a.m. — City of Palisade Fourth of July celebration with an old-fashioned family parade that winds through downtown Palisade and finishes at Veterans Memorial Park, followed by games, ice cream and picnics in the park.

10 & 11 a.m. — Join a Colo. Nat'l Monument park ranger for “A Monumental Independence Celebration” talk. Meet at Independence Monument View Overlook 1.1 mile east of the Visitor Center on Rim Rock Drive. Bring water and wear sunscreen.

10:30-11:30 a.m. — July 4th celebration at Colorado National Monument with the raising of the American flag on top of Independence Monument. Best viewing locations for watching the flag-raising ceremony will take place at Independence Monument View Overlook and Otto's Trail.

10:30-11:30 a.m. — Guided walk: join a Colo. Nat'l Monument park ranger for a short walk to the breathtaking overlook at the end of Otto's Trail. Learn about John Otto's 98-year-old tradition for July 4. Info: 858-3617, ext. 360.

Noon & 6 p.m. — Reds, Whites & Blues Festival at Varaison Vineyards & Winery, 405 N. 1st St., Palisade. Food by the World Grand Champion BBQ team & music by the Johnnie O Blues Band, $95. Info/Reservations: 464-4928, varaisonvineyards.com.

6 p.m. — The annual Downtown Independence Day Parade on Main Street GJ between 8th & 1st streets. Theme: Lincoln Bicentennial 1809-2009, Live the Legacy. Info: downtowngj.org, 245-9697. Parking free in the Rood Ave. parking garage.

6:30 p.m. — “Music on the Mountain,” Grand Mesa Visitors Center, Hwy 65. Songs, poetry & stories w/Ray Carpenter. Info: 874-6695.

7 p.m. — Western Slope Conservative Alliance BBQ, Old Courthouse Lawn, 544 Rood, following the downtown parade. Music, fun, guest speakers: Josh Penry, Steve King, Laura Bradford, and more. Info: Questions: wsca@bresnan.net.

8 p.m. — Grand Junction Fireworks Show, Lincoln Park Suplizio Field. Entertainment starts at 8 p.m., fireworks at sundown. $4/advance, $5/gate, 2& under FREE. Info: www.gjcity.org.
