Protect Colorado from the Clean Energy Act

I was pleased to see Rep. John Salazar went against his party to oppose the American Clean Energy and Security Act Friday. The bill, which supposedly seeks to reduce carbon emissions by 80 percent in 2050, is in reality, a tax upon the working class families Obama promised would get tax breaks.

The worst part about the bill is the Congressional Budget Office did some fancy footwork to make the bill appear less damaging. The budget office said the bill would cost households $175 in increases by 2020, or about a postage stamp a day.

But what sounds too good to be true, usually is.

When the Heritage Foundation did its analysis of the bill, it found the bill would cost the economy $161 billion in 2020, or $1,870 for a family of four per year. After 2020, that number rises to $6,800.

All of a sudden the bill doesn't feel all warm and fuzzy.

That's why it was pleasant to see Rep. Salazar stood up for the Third District and refused to vote in favor of the bill because he could not in good conscience pass increased costs onto his constituents. Too bad the other Colorado Dems couldn't step away from their party to do what is right for Colorado. Now that the bill has unfortunately passed the house, we need to make sure Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet protect Colorado from this unacceptable legislation.
