Haupt joins the Free Press newsroom

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — You probably noticed a new byline on page 1 today.

Wyatt Haupt Jr. joins the Grand Junction Free Press as a staff writer/copy editor in the newsroom.

Haupt most recently worked as a reporter for the Aspen Times, a sister paper also owned by Colorado Mountain News Media.

He has been in the business for more than 14 years, having previously worked for The Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction and North County Times in Escondido, Calif.

“Wyatt brings a wealth of experience and talent to our newspaper. He is wonderful fit for our close-knit family at the Free Press. Expect great things from him,” said Managing Editor Tracy Dvorak.

Haupt also was a staff writer with the Daily Press in Victorville, Calif., and the Appeal-Democrat in Marysville, Calif. Prior to that he worked for the Los Angeles Times in Costa Mesa, Calif.

He was also the executive editor of The Daily Titan, the campus newspaper at Cal State Fullerton.

“It's great timing to have Wyatt join our staff here at the Free Press,” said publisher Valerie J. Smith. “He is familiar with Grand Junction and western Colorado and brings solid journalism skills and good energy. Our readers know the Free Press doesn't sit still, and they can look forward to his stories in our newspaper and on our Web site that they simply will not see anywhere else.”

Haupt holds a bachelor's degree in English literature from U.C. Irvine.
