Artists sought for fall Open Studios Tour

To celebrate art in the Grand Valley, Artspace & Open Studios is planning another outstanding Open Studios Tour throughout the community this fall. The event blends the best view of artwork with a tour of area working studios, free of charge, for the public.

The Open Studios Tour is a project that benefits so many because it promotes and markets local artwork and the artists who create it, fosters growth of the visual arts across the Grand Valley, enhances economic vitality in our arts community because the artists receive 100 percent of all sales, and it cultivates access to and appreciation of cultural opportunities for both residents and visitors alike.

For avid collectors or novices, this tour will heighten enjoyment of fine arts and fine crafts. Bring the entire family and discover the many talented artists in our neighborhoods and the wonderful handmade, original art within our community. Save these dates — the weekend studio tour starts Saturday, Oct. 10, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and continues Sunday, Oct. 11, noon-5 p.m.

Applications to participate now available

Artspace & Open Studios welcomes artists from around the valley to apply for this special event. For artists to apply for the fall Open Studios Tour, fill out an application form available at www.artspacecolorado.org. Send the completed application with three or four digital images of representative artwork to www.artspaceopenstudios@gmail.com. To apply by mail, send the completed application with photographs to Artspace, P.O. Box 2827, GJ, CO 81502.

Once accepted, artists will be asked to pay a nominal fee for signage (Artspace members $25; nonmembers $50). Call Artspace at 640-8177 for more information Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. or e-mail artspaceopenstudios@gmail.com.

The deadline to receive an application to be included in the fall Open Studios Tour is Friday, Aug. 21. Art groups are strongly encouraged to apply! Even if artists don't have a creative space or studio, Artspace will have locations available.

The upcoming October Open Studios Tour offers a fun opportunity to meet artists and a way to drive or bike around the Grand Valley. During the Spring Open Studios Tour in May, 60 artists from Fruita to Palisade presented their work in 12 different media including jewelry, ceramics, painting, pastel, fiber, sculpture, collage, mixed media, gourds, wood and others.

The tour offers a showcase throughout Mesa County of new artwork rarely seen in galleries in the vicinity. Many artists also provide demonstrations and explanations of their special tools and techniques that make each media unique.

Special for the fall tour is children's art activities! Make plans and get ready to bike or drive through the distinctive neighborhoods of the Grand Valley and discover artistic treasures to view or purchase. Learn more about the artists and the preview exhibit coming this September 2009, by visiting www.artspacecolorado.org.

Calendar highlights artists on tour

For a preview of artists on the tour, Artspace has published a new calendar “Artists of Western Colorado.” The 2010 calendar is easy to carry and easy to use. The unique format (5 inches wide by 7 inches high) makes it convenient to carry with you because it fits into any briefcase, bag, or purse. The calendar features 26 full color art images from notable artists in our area, many of whom will be on the fall Open Studios Tour. The 2010 datebook makes a perfect gift for birthdays, anniversaries, and special times throughout the year. The calendar is on sale now for only $13.99 plus tax from Artspace by calling 640-8177.
