Palisade Police Chief Carroll Quarles is the first candidate running in the 2010 election for Mesa County Sheriff to toss his hat into the ring.

Quarles, 57 has been in law enforcement for 38 years — 14 of those as the chief in Palisade. He started his law enforcement career in the U.S. Air Force as a security police officer. He then served with the Wichita Falls, TX and Jackson, WY police departments before coming to Palisade.

As chief, Quarles oversees six officers and an annual budget of approximately $650,000.

Running for sheriff is a chance for Quarles to further his career. “I feel like I have the opportunity to serve in a bigger capacity”, he said.

Up front, Quarles doesn't see a lot at the Sheriff's Office that he'd like to change. He anticipates that one of his biggest challenges will be dealing with the budget in tight economic times and looking for “creative ideas to maintain good, quality service.”

He is expected to officially announce his candidacy in Palisade on June 27 at Memorial Park at 1pm.

Incumbent Stan Hilkey is prevented from running for re-election due to term limits.
