Who's News in the Grand Valley Business Community: June 8

• Congrats to Chris Brown, for coming up with another idea for a bicycle store — one that should be popular given these trying economic times. Brown opened “Dirty Brown Cycles,” 123 S. Sixth St. (behind Main St. Bagels). The new biz is taking in used bikes for consignment; there are some pretty sweet deals.

“The current economic situation creates a natural market of service and repair as opposed to disposable income for new items,” Brown said. The shop will be open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 245-7939.

• Chris Reddin, executive director of the Business Incubator Center, recently completed the National Business Incubation Association Incubator Management Certificate Program. The certificate provides incubator executives with a comprehensive and practical overview of the tasks and responsibilities of managing a business incubation program.

Over the past 22 years, the local incubator has supported the launch of more than 200 companies, creating nearly 9,000 jobs and generating more than $137 million in revenue. WOW!

• Grady W. Busse, CEO/founder of Action Publishing, has been named the U.S. Small Business Administration's Colorado Small Business Person of the Year for 2009. She was nominated by Dr. Martha Stoner for her innovative model of compassionate end-of-life care. Stoner called Whitney a champion for change in the standard for hospice and palliative care nationwide.

• Berna B.'s, a hidden gem located at 2913 F Road, unit 101, serves up dishes that are about as close to mom's home cooking as you'll find. I had the pleasure a few weeks ago and am still reminiscing over the amazing, homemade corn chowder — and I don't even like corn chowder. The prices are totally reasonable as well. It's homecooking in a welcoming, warm, cozy setting. Call 245-4144 for more information. OK, there's my pitch for the day.

• Solar Sales recently opened an office in GJ at 2754 Compass Drive, suite F. The company specializes in lighting solutions for real estate signs. Kent Stine of GJ is the company's new vice president.

Owned by Chris and Jamie Becker, the company designed and developed, Solumina, a product that illuminates real estate signage to increase the exposure of properties to potential customers.

For more information, call 424-5197, kent.stine@solarsales.tv or visit the Web site at mysolarlight.com.

They participate with a variety of insurance companies including workman compensation, and have the ability to provide pre-employment screening, drug testing and physical therapy on site.

• Mesa Mall has extended the deadline on their search for the next Teen Life Stylist — a style savvy know-it-all with the gift of gab. Students have until June 15 to apply. The Teen Life Stylist's role is to act as the media spokesperson and offer teen-geared fashion and gift-giving advice on behalf of Mesa Mall. This is a unique opportunity for a teen to gain “real world” marketing and PR experience. The Teen Life Stylist is a paid position at $10 per hour. The student will work approximately 15-20 hours per PR/marketing campaign, during three primary PR/marketing campaigns (back to school, prom, and graduation gifts). Candidates must be a junior or senior enrolled in high school during the 2009-2010 school year. Parental consent is required for students under 18. Applications are available at guest services in the mall. For more information, call 242-0009 or visit shopmesamall.com/jobs.
