GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Howard College (Big Spring, TX) claimed the 2009 NJCAA World Series championship Friday night after defeating Santa Fe College (Gainesville, FL) 7 to 4.
It was reported that 10,912 spectators came out to Suplizio Field Friday, May 29, to watch the Hawks win their second National JUCO Championship and end their season with a 63 and 1 record.
The game was a hard fought defensive battle that lasted 10 innings. Both teams scored one run in the 1st and added two more by the end of the 4th.
The Hawks took the lead early in the 9th with a solo home run from Andrew Collazo. The Saints dug in and tied the game at four with a double by Keon Broxton. Tyler Cook was thrown out at the plate sending the game into extra innings.
Howard loaded the bases in the top of the 10th and scored the winning run on a walk. Collazo then belted out a two run single to add a little insurance. The Saints were unable to put anything together, giving the Hawks the victory.
Dylan Cacciola piched eight complete innings for the Hawks. He kept the Saints to three runs and nine hits during his tenure on the mound.
Five Howard players were named to the Bus Bergman All Tournament Team. Collazo, a sophomore was named the JUCO defensive player of the tournament and the Preston Walker Most Valuable Player. Runey Davis, Bryan Johns, Monk Kreder and Zach Neal were also named to the team.
Former Mesa State baseball coach Bus Bergman threw out the first pitch for the championship game. He was joined on the mound by his son Walt, tournament director and two members of the grounds crew, Brett and Eric, his grandsons.
The Mesa State Mavericks were saluted on field before the game for their play this season that culminated with a trip to the NCAA Division II World Series in Cary, NC.
