GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. The Business Incubator Center will host a celebration and book signing of Tom Y. Sawyers new book Pro Excel Financial Modeling: Building Models for Technology Startups on Monday, April 27, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Incubator campus, 2591 B 3/4 Road.
Its a hands-on how to develop financial models of a company, Sawyer said. This is the book I wish someone would have given me when I started my technology company.
Sawyer worked on the Front Range with the Rockies Venture Club, an entrepreneurial organization, before he came to Grand Junction in 2000.
Sawyer directed information technology for the Martin Marietta Space Launch Systems Titan IV missile program, where he received the Outstanding Achievement Award for Information Technology Management. He left after 13 years to start his own dot-com business, which he sold a few years later.
Sawyer is a business and technology consultant, and he has worked with start-up companies since the mid-1990s. Hes also been president of several high-tech companies. Local businesses that Sawyer has worked with in areas of finance and technology include Movers Suite Software and Gateway Canyons Resort.
I primarily like working with small businesses, Sawyer said. Theyre really the backbone of the economy of the U.S.
I wrote this book really to help small business owners track the resources they need.
His book gives a step-by-step description of how to develop a financial model, he said.
It helps bridge the gap between the entrepreneur with an idea and the investor who wants to understand how the company makes money and how it would get a return on its investment, Sawyer said. The number one problem entrepreneurs have is finding resources needed to start a business.
A financial model is a mathematical representation of the company, Sawyer said. It calculates operating expenses and generates financial predictions. A financial model gives the business owner something to take to the investor.
Sawyer has been a panelist and a presenter at various Incubator forums and events, so both Sawyer and Incubator staff thought it a natural fit for Sawyer to do a book signing there.
Chris (executive director Chris Reddin) was impressed with his book, said Julie Morey, small business development center director.
Reddin gave Pro Excel Financial Modeling a five-star rating at Amazon.com.
The book is easy to read and tracks you step by step through the Excel model. This book is a great resource for all growing companies, not just technology-based organizations, wrote Reddin.
Appetizers and drinks will be served at the book signing Monday.
