Editorial: Well-deserved accreditation

More than 53,000 acres in Mesa County have been preserved as conservation easements since 1980 through the Mesa County Land Trust, a local agency dedicated to preserving wildlife habitat, agricultural lands and scenic areas.

This is critical in an area sure to see continued growth in coming decades.

The Land Trust announced this week that it received an accreditation award from the Land Trust Accreditation Commission.

Of the 1,500 land trusts nationwide, only 53 are accredited — the Mesa Land Trust being one of them.

In a year that has seen some Front Range land trusts under the microscope for shady business practices, it’s important that local residents recognize that the local Mesa Land Trust is a reputable organization recognized by its peers for its dedication to working with local landowners to conserve land critical to maintaining the character and essence of an agricultural community.

Harry Talbott, one of the original farmers who helped found the Mesa Land Trust in 1980, was at the accreditation announcement and celebration this week.

“It tells me the Land Trust will be around for a long time,” he said.

We hope so.

If it’s not around, we fear the special landscapes it works to conserve won’t be either.
