GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Kim Kelley said she always knew she wanted to own her own business.
After she organized a friends wedding in 2006, she knew what that business would be. Her friend needed a caterer and flowers, and he asked her to plan it.
Kelley formed All About You Event Planning just over a year ago.
I made sure everything was where it was supposed to be flowers on top of the mountain where they got married; the caterer, DJ and flowers set up down below, Kelley said.
It was fun. I like to do all the planning.
Kelley plans events around her full-time job as a proposal manager for JG Management Systems, a government consulting firm.
Event planning can involve ordering flowers, hiring a caterer, finding a space to hold the event, renting tables and chairs, buying decorations even pointing the bride in the right direction for buying a wedding dress or bridesmaid dresses.
Sometimes Kelleys hired to read all the contracts, contact the vendors, and come to the rehearsal and the wedding.
She directs the photographers, the DJ, the wedding party and the priest as to what to do when.
I make sure everybody is going where theyre supposed to be going, Kelley said. I tell them when to walk down the aisle.
There are a lot of details.
Kelley said shes always been an organized person, so the work suits her.
She also organizes birthday parties, open houses, anniversaries and Christmas parties. One event that was particularly fun to do was a combined surprise 40th birthday party and wedding vow renewal.
Located at 2591 B 3/4 Road, the Incubator offers low-cost training and free counseling for new and expanding businesses in Mesa County.
Kelley also consulted one-on-one with Incubator Program Manager Annalisa Pearson about marketing matters.
Pearson later hired Kelley to plan the Incubators holiday open house last year.
She really made the event pretty much worry-free, Pearson said. Its generally a lot of work for the staff at the Incubator. It was worth every dime.
Kelleys fees depend on the number of people the event serves, how much planning is involved and a person, or organizations budget, Kelley said.
Kelley is originally from Houston. She moved to Colorado four years ago because I wanted to snowboard and not shovel snow, she said.
