There are times when getting back on solid ground is not only comforting, but necessary. After a day of sailing, it feels good to be back on dry land. Climbing a 14er is rewarding and fun, but after scrambling up steep inclines over loose rock, theres something to be said about getting back to flat, solid ground.
Getting back on solid ground after a personal hardship, difficult financial situation or tough family matter helps guide us to the next step in life.
At the Grand Junction Free Press, we, too, need to be on solid ground.
On Monday, I announced that the Free Press will be changing to a three-day publication schedule Monday, Wednesday and Friday beginning Monday, Feb. 9. The newspaper has been published five days a week, Monday through Friday, since the paper became a part of the Grand Valley community in the spring of 2003.
The Free Press came out of the gate strong. I remember some of the early editions and the enthusiastic welcome the new paper in town received.
The Free Press staff in the early days was talented and driven. The staff today is talented and driven.
The Free Press quickly gained loyal readers and advertisers. Today we have thousands of loyal readers and advertisers.
In the early days, the Free Press generously supported nonprofit organizations and community events. In 2008, the Free Press donated more than $100,000 in cash and in-kind contributions to local organizations.
The Free Press was free on its first day of publication. The Free Press will remain a free newspaper.
While the foundation at the Free Press is strong, current economic conditions are testing our stability. As we plan for 2009 and renew our commitment to provide news, advertising and information to the Grand Valley community, the only option was to reduce our print publication days.
Beginning next Monday, you will still find the Free Press at more than 800 locations in Mesa County, including at hundreds of businesses and convenient rack or store locations. Home delivery will still be available. We will continue to publish Real Estate Showplace, Freetime, TV Weekly, Whos News, Picture Purrfect, Health Hints, Savor, People Helping People, Faith, Education and more.
Each edition will include classified advertising, the New York Times Crossword Puzzle, Omarrs Astrological Briefs, Sudoku, Grand Valley Ramblings, Community Calendar and more.
Our Web site, www.gjfreepress.com, will be updated seven days a week.
The Free Press is on solid ground. If you, our readers and advertisers, will stay with us, the foundation will remain intact.
