GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Artspace & Open Studios has been host to many special events in different venues around the Grand Valley. This year is no different, and everyone can anticipate an exciting start to the new year with these irresistible events. The nonprofit organization plans one-of-a-kind art events for residents and visitors to enjoy art in nontraditional ways.
Discover new works from notable local and regional artists as well as emerging artists in nontraditional settings that give you experiences that are as diverse and unique as the Grand Valley itself. Heres a partial list of venues:

January
On Jan. 7, United Way hosts an exhibit of Artspace members works featuring Bridget Craigs photographs and Lynne Andersons clay wall hangings in the third floor conference space at U.S. Bank between Fourth and Grand. Ongoing exhibits will continue throughout the year with changing displays coming in March, July and October. Hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Chez Lena, on the campus of Western Colorado Community College at 2508 Blichmann Ave., is a special place for good food and service since it is home to the culinary school. Starting Jan. 15, a spectacular collection of artwork from landscapes to abstract art forms can be viewed during the lunch hour. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday. Look for new exhibits throughout the school year changing in March, August and October.

February
When you step into Environments on Thursday, Feb. 26, at Two Rivers Winery Chateau, youll discover a marketplace of the newest fine art and fine crafts this region has to offer. With more than 100 artists represented, youll find work that reflects refined views of inner and outer environments expressed in vibrant colors, shapes and designs. It has been said that the whole point of making art is making something new. Artspace members showcase their newest creations in a wide array of media for the public to see or purchase including jewelry, furniture, sculpture, paintings, ceramics, fiber, drawings, collage and lithography.
Artspace has a mission to incubate growth in the arts and individual artists thereby enhancing the economic vitality of the arts community so artists and patrons can thrive. Environments gives the public a rare opportunity to see an extraordinary gathering of work by many of the most promising artists in our region. The exhibit is open from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26. Guests can meet the artists in a relaxed atmosphere with wine and appetizers in the evening. Everyone is welcome at the reception on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. A silent auction, with donated items from businesses across the valley, is an added attraction to raise funds for educational programs and scholarships.

April
Prior to the Open Studios Tour, artists exhibit a sample of their art in the Vectra Bank lobby at 2394 Patterson Road (at F Road across from the mall). The exhibit begins on April 2 and runs through April 30, from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Its free and open to the public.
An artist reception on Thursday, April 23, from 6-8 p.m. gives the public a chance to meet artists on the tour. Sample wines and tasty appetizers, and be the first to pick up tour maps.

This self-guided driving tour is a discovery activity suitable for the whole family and runs Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 3, from noon to 5 p.m. Guests can drive to a multitude of studios that suit their time, interest or budget. Call 640-8177 for more information.

The 2010 Datebook Artists of Western Colorado promises to be even bigger and better than the first publication. The easy-to-carry, easy-to-use annual calendar has plenty of space for notes and highlights yearly holidays. Each contains 26 full-color art images, all designed to highlight the creative expressions that make the Western Slope unique. The datebook sells for $13.99. Bulk orders receive a discount from Artspace. The publication will be on sale starting in June and be available throughout the year.
