John Tubbs died on Dec. 23 of a sudden heart attack at home.
John was born in Durango and raised in Allison as a sheep rancher and backcountry outfitter. John met Christine Peterson and was happily married for 48 years. He graduated from Colorado State University with a bachelors degree in science and a masters degree from Adams State College, and obtained his educational specialist degree from Western State College.
In 1962, he moved to Grand Junction, where he enjoyed a satisfying career in education. He served the community as a science teacher at Central High School and Bookcliff Junior High, then as assistant principle for Orchard Mesa Middle School and principal for Battlement Mesa Elementary School. John supervised student teachers for Mesa State College and Colorado Christian University into his retirement.
He loved sports, hunting, traveling and chasing his grandkids. Throughout his life he played, coached and officiated. His passions changed with the seasons from football, basketball and softball.
Dad was a wonderful father, husband, grandfather and role model to all who knew him. He valued honesty, fairness and loyalty toward his fellow men.
John is survived by his wife, Christine; mother, Frances; brother Hal; sister Judy; and sons Jay, K.C. and Trent. He was a dedicated grandfather of five, and with a big heart he laughed, teased and played with them. John was loved and respected by all who knew him. We will all miss him dearly.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. There will be an additional service in Bayfield during Memorial Day weekend.
In lieu of flowers please send contributions to the Grand Junction Church of Christ Youth Camp at 2893 F Road, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
