GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Santa Claus is pretty old for kindergartner Josh Pacheco.

“I think he’s 13,” Pacheco said.

Classmate Zach Garcia is guessing a little higher on Santa’s age — 99.

The kindergartners in Daisy McEvoy’s class at Orchard Avenue Elementary are pretty sure they know what Santa looks like and what he does this time of year. He has a white beard, red clothes, and gives children toys each Christmas Eve.

“He looks like a big man with about four jobs,” said one student, Thomas Steutzenburg. “And he says ‘On Dancer, on Prancer, on the rest of you.’”

“He eats cookies,” said Annie Pool.

Does he have a favorite?

“Just cookies,” she responded.

All those cookies add up. Weight guesses for Santa ranged from 100 pounds to 700 pounds in Ms. McEvoy’s classroom last week.

Hauling all those toys around in a big red bag can be quite a work-out for Santa’s bowl full of jelly-sized belly. On Christmas day, “he takes a nap,” said Aiden Renova.

But the rest of the year, Santa’s eyes are wide open.

“He’s magical,” said Mia Edwards.

“He can hear it when you say something bad,” added Megan Lederman.

“I know how he sees you,” Renova said. “Through the TV.”

When Santa’s work is done, most of the students said their favorite part of Christmas Day is opening the presents he leaves. Their favorite gifts are toys.

Noah Menzies likes Hot Wheels and Pokemon best, while Reignen Graham just likes it “when you get what you want.”

Edwards said she likes toys too, but her favorite thing about Christmas is snow, something she’s already gotten to enjoy.

“I made a snow castle and snow got in my sister’s eyes and it was fun,” she said.
